Build Fluency

Critics of fluency building say it’s drill and kill. It ruins motivation. It’s boring. It’s too hard. It’s too competitive. Kids hate it.

The reality is another story.

Building fluency is NOT about racing or “going fast.” It’s about going as quickly as needed. As we say at Morningside, “it’s a pace, not a race.”

Good fluency practice builds motivation and confidence as students find daily success. They learn to make dramatic progress through small, daily improvements.

High quality deliberate practice teaches self-monitoring, as students record and analyze their own learning data. It teaches self-advocacy skills as students learn when, why, and how to get support if they’re not making progress. It also teaches peer coaching, as students encourage each other to make progress.

And it doesn’t take long. With just 10-15 minutes a day, students can make remarkable outcomes like these:
